Ask the Expert: Introducing the Community Supervision Resource Center

For this edition of the Ask the Expert series, representatives from the Center for Effective Public Policy will introduce the Community Supervision Resource Center (CSRC), an initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs’ Bureau of Justice Assistance to support community supervision authorities advance along the continuum of best and emerging practices. The CSRC serves pretrial, probation, and parole supervision agencies and helps them implement supervision policies, programs, and practices that promote successful outcomes and ensure public safety. CSRC staff will discuss new and upcoming free resources, training, and technical assistance opportunities for the field on various topics, including behavioral health practices.

Ask the Expert: Embedded Mental Health Clinicians in Probation

For this session in the Ask the Expert Series, The Virginia Department of Corrections Community Corrections program, a national Criminal Justice Mental Health learning site, will be joining us to discuss their Community Corrections Mental Health Program. This program has taken an innovative approach to addressing the mental health needs of people on state community supervision in the Commonwealth by embedding full-time mental health staff within their probation and parole districts. Presenters from the Community Mental Health and Wellness team will discuss how these positions were established, the role of regional and district mental health clinicians in consultation with probation officers, and lessons learned since the implementation of the program in 2017.

For this session in the Ask the Expert Series, Dr. Gary S. Cuddeback, interim dean and associate dean for research at Virginia Commonwealth University, will discuss specialized mental health caseloads in probation and lessons learned from the implementation of these caseload types in a large southeastern state. This session will address the complex needs of justice-involved individuals with serious mental illnesses and how specialized caseloads create additional opportunities for collaboration with mental health services.
